Oxidative stress

A fundamental mechanism ubiquitous

ADMEThe oxidative metabolism is a fundamental cellular metabolism. As in any reaction, a large number of biological reactions involving the exchange of electrons, which only a small part escapes the expected reaction. These electrons will move on to other atoms and form free radicals. The atoms are free radicals may be more or less toxic and the cell must make an appropriate response to detoxify them. If the response is inadequate, the radical formation bursts, there is oxidative stress. This stress is progressing autocatalytic and will generate many side effects.

Many drugs have, in addition to their own effects, effects of pro-or anti-oxidants. They can therefore deregulate the existing cellular oxidative balance and generate step by step unexpected effects. These cascading effects will fuel the biological mechanisms that may be indirect or amplify the side effects of the molecule.

Understanding these effects is a necessity because they can be very different from those sought in the experiment.

The interdependence of defense systems makes complex the study of oxidative metabolism. A partial approach from a few parameters can hide entire sections and lead to erroneous interpretations of observed results.

To know the real state of defenses and provide the best possible estimate of antioxidant status, we have developed a wide range of tests, including among others, defense systems, enzymatic or not, but also markers of peroxidation.

For our scientists, it is impossible to approach a study on this topic without providing dosing groups analysis. Only works based on the exploration of several antioxidants among the principal associated with one or more markers of stress can lead to interpretations which give rational relevance to the results returned.
